However, they may lead to the fact that the work will not be accepted at all, and perhaps nobody wants to experience it. Therefore, in this article, we will focus on the most common mistakes in the final thesis, so that you can avoid them, and give your work with ease.

The right topic is half the success

Errors in final theses can arise both during writing and at the very beginning, when the student chooses the appropriate topic of the thesis. However, during this period, the student knows very little about the subject and relies on his supervisor.

However, if you choose an inappropriate topic because of your industry and capabilities, it will be your problem. So make sure to choose a topic and learn at least some basic information to know that you can do the work. Equally important is the name of the whole work. It should not be too general or specific. In the first case, you may not be able to cover the whole topic, in the latter case you will not know what to write about.

The outline guides you and keeps you in check

The outline is a rough draft of the work content. It is good to think about it and put it together before you start writing – many students underestimate its meaning. However, the outline will greatly facilitate the work, as it tells you what to do next and what you should concentrate on in the text. At the same time, you avoid turning away from the topic, which is very common in final theses.

Oh, that formatting

Formatting work is key to evaluating a thesis, while mistakes in this area are common. Every school has different formatting requirements. You will find them in the appropriate methodology for the preparation of final theses on the school website. Mostly, the methodology clearly specifies font size, font, line spacing, numbering, and page margins.

However, when formatting, you should also focus on the line-of-line rules where there should not be a single letter word. Furthermore, do not forget to justify the block, indent the first line in paragraphs, uniform numbering of headings, images, tables or graphs, appropriate use of serif and sans serif fonts, etc. Formatting is good to start at the beginning of work. But it is not possible to format everything and have peace.

Literary sources are poisoning, but important

The use of literary sources in the text is mostly poisoning for students. Nonetheless, literary sources are important to the resulting assessment, and students often make mistakes in this area. For example, they use an inappropriate format or forget to mention some of the resources in the bibliography. The Harvard system, with which you will not shame, is the most suitable for writing literary sources. You will need to manually check for missing resources or use one of the literary processing programs, such as Zotero or Mendeley.

But be careful, the citation format and paraphrase are mostly different. Most students opt for paraphrases, thanks to which they can elegantly incorporate the adopted text into their own, of course with the appropriate reference to the source publication. With direct quotes, it’s more challenging. Quoted text should be enclosed in quotation marks, the source should refer not only to the publication, but also to the appropriate page from which the citation originates. Anyway – with quotations this should not be overstated.

Me, they, us, it or nobody?

It is generally unacceptable to speak about yourself as an author in the final works (eg the author has worked, the author has studied). Nor should you use the first person of the plural or singular. The only right choice is an impersonal work-related wording (for example, work is concentrated, the goal is to work, etc.). Also avoid frequent use of passive forms so that the text does not look too rigid.

Typo here, bug there

Typos and misspellings are really unpleasant in the final works and also have an impact on evaluation; moreover, they are very common. All you have to do is to have the text checked using the automatic correction in Word, and ask your loved ones to read the work and focus especially on any mistakes. Give it a moment, it pays off.

I don’t want to, I still have time!

Last minute writing is probably the worst mistake you can make. Of course, you can recognize this in the final text. In this case, students often do not manage to grab basic things like formatting or grammar, not to mention the content.

So you start on time and don’t leave the last minute. This will avoid an unpleasant period of stress and you will have enough time to prepare for the final exams.
